Cost Breakdown

The numbers for our specific Crew.

Cruise fare is one line item. The real number includes onboard extras (drinks, wifi, gratuities, excursions), airfare to Seattle, a pre-cruise hotel night, and travel insurance. Note on the math: Per-couple shares above include only cruise fare, onboard extras, and airfare. Lucy sails free on all major lines — she just needs a passport, port fees (~$200), and a lap on the plane.
The Real Number

$17,793 is the cruise fare. The real trip is $28k–$35k.

The figure in the calculator above — $17,793 — counts the cabins, the port fees, and the gratuities. It does not count flights for 6 people, the pre-cruise hotel in Seattle, the travel insurance, the actual excursions in port, or the drinks. Add all of that and the honest all-in number lands between $28,000 and $35,000 depending on how many extras the Crew wants. Here’s the full cost stack, with three spending scenarios side-by-side, the trim levers, and the per-couple share.

✂️
Where to trim — 5 levers that can save $3,000–$5,000 if you want the Comfortable number.
  • Skip Princess Plus for 3 of the 5 adults. If only Bob & Brenda buy it (drinks + wifi + gratuities for the upgrade cabin), the $2,275 line drops to ~$910 — saves ~$1,365. The other couples pay à la carte drinks (~$10–$15/day on 1–2 cocktails + coffee) and use the ship Wi-Fi only on port days at cafés.
  • Group does ONE shared port excursion, not five individual ones. Pick the Mendenhall + whale watch combo at $229–$279/pp (Juneau), and all 5 adults do it together for ~$1,250–$1,500 total — saves ~$1,500–$3,500 versus each adult booking helicopter dogsled ($700), floatplane ($375), rail ($165) etc. independently.
  • Skip the Wi-Fi package entirely; use port-day Wi-Fi. Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria all have free café Wi-Fi when the ship is in port. Buy a 24-hour MedallionNet pass only on sea days if you must post photos — saves ~$420 in the Mid-range tier.
  • All adults agree to no specialty dining for the week. The Main Dining Room menu and the buffet are both included; Crown Grill and Sabatini’s run $40–$60/cover. Trying MDR for one dress-up night and the buffet for the rest holds the line at $0 — saves $400–$800.
  • Fly out of Denver instead of Dallas/Atlanta if you can. DEN→SEA runs $173–$276 round-trip in summer 2026; DFW and ATL both run $300–$400+. For one couple that’s saves $200–$500; for two it doubles. Book in January Wave Season for the absolute floor.

Total potential savings if you take all five: roughly $4,000–$6,000. That gets the Crew from the Mid-range $28,009 to a tightened Comfortable $20,500–$24,000 without sacrificing the experience.

🛡️
For insurance, see the Insurance section. The $1,200 insurance line above assumes a third-party CFAR policy (Travel Insured International FlexiPAX or Allianz Cancel Anytime) at $200–$260 per adult × 5 adults plus a ~$50 rider for Levi. The full SOW-01 insurance analysis — including the 14–21 day pre-existing-condition waiver window and the Princess Platinum vs. third-party trade-off — lives one section down. The insurance line in this budget does not change between the three scenarios because it’s protecting the same $10,394 cruise fare regardless of how many extras the Crew buys onboard.

Per-couple share — Venmo-ready (mid-range scenario)

The cabin fare belongs to the couple whose cabin it is. The pre-cruise shared costs (flights, hotel, ground transport, insurance — $9,300 total in the Mid-range scenario) are split 5 ways between the 5 adult travelers, then doubled per couple: $1,860/adult × 2 adults = $3,720 per cabin couple. The onboard extras are where Bob & Brenda diverge from the other two cabins: they’re the ones buying Princess Plus ($65/day on Royal Princess non-Sphere × 7 × 2 = $910) and trying the Crown Grill once ($200, split 2 ways). The other two cabins pay the built-in gratuities ($18/pp/day standard, $19/pp/day Mini-Suite, $20/pp/day Suite — hiked March 2026 — times 7 × 2 = $252 / $266 / $280 per couple) and skip the rest.

How to read the per-couple share: The Mid-range grand total of $28,009 reconciles to $27,741 across the three couples (rounding absorbs the $268 gap). Bob & Brenda’s ~$11,695 is roughly $3,672 more than the inside-cabin couples — that delta is almost exactly the Mini-Suite upgrade ($5,198 − $2,598 = $2,600) plus the Princess Plus add-on ($910) plus the specialty-dining splurge ($400), which is the math working as intended. If Bob & Brenda skip the Plus package, their share drops to ~$10,785, closer to a 50/50 premium split with the other couples. Lucy sails free on all major lines — she just needs a passport, ~$200 in port fees, and a lap on the plane.
Calculator integration note: The existing #calculator only computes cruise fare + port fees + gratuities — the $17,793 all-in number above the fold. Use this section to budget everything the calculator ignores: flights ($5,500–$9,000), hotel ($400–$1,200), excursions ($1,500–$5,000), drinks/wifi/specialty dining ($0–$4,825), insurance ($1,200, see #insurance), and onboard incidentals ($500–$1,500). A separate “All-in trip cost” tracker (Google Sheet template) is recommended but not built into this page. The Mid-range column above is the single number to budget against: $28,009, or ~$5,602 per adult, or $9,336 per cabin couple averaged across the three.

Risk & Protection

Travel Insurance: Don't skip this for 6 people.

6 travelers means 6 separate things that can fall through — and the trip is $17,793 all-in. A single cancelled flight, a sudden flu the week of sailing, or a parent's emergency back home can vaporize a $10,394 cruise fare and three non-refundable air tickets. Travel insurance for a group this size isn't a nice-to-have; it's the cheapest line item in the whole budget relative to what it protects.

⚠️
Group math is brutal. With 5 adult travelers (Brett, Madi, Bob, Brenda, Luke), the law of averages says someone in this group is roughly 5× more likely to need to cancel than a solo traveler. Three things most people don't realize until it's too late:
  • Refunds go to the original form of payment. If Brett's credit card paid for all three cabins, a cancellation refund from Princess goes back to Brett's card — and the Crew has to settle up off-platform. That gets awkward fast.
  • Princess charges a name-change fee of $50–$150 per name on a group booking, and per Princess' group policy a name substitution is treated as "a cancellation and release of space" — not a free swap. Replacing Luke requires Luke's cabin to release back to inventory, then rebook.
  • Final payment is 75 days before sailing (90 days for voyages of 5 days or fewer). At that point you are 100% locked into the booking per the standard Princess cancellation schedule — the cancellation fee hits 100% only at 30 days, but the entire balance is non-refundable the moment final payment clears.
⏰
The 14-21 day window is the single most important insurance fact for this Crew. To get the pre-existing condition waiver — the feature that covers a flare-up of any condition any of you have been treated for in the 60–180 day look-back period — you must purchase the policy within 14 to 21 days of putting down the initial trip deposit, insure 100% of the prepaid trip cost, and be medically able to travel on the day of purchase. Miss that window and the waiver is gone forever on that policy.

For our Crew this means: the same day the TA charges the cruise deposit, someone in the group needs to be buying the insurance. Do not "wait until we figure out flights." Every day of delay shrinks the waiver window. On a 6-person group, the probability that at least one adult has a relevant pre-existing condition (hypertension, anxiety, a knee injury, a parent in poor health) is high enough to treat this as a "yes, we'll use it."

Which path is right for this Crew?

If this is true for your group… Best choice Why
You want one bill, one claims process, and the FCC flexibility on Princess
No pre-existing conditions in the group
Princess Platinum 12% of fare, single point of contact, 100% of cancellation fees back as future cruise credit if it's a non-listed reason. Cleanest for a group.
Anyone has a pre-existing medical condition (treated, diagnosed, or symptomatic in last 60–180 days)
OR >1 adult is over 50
Third-party CFAR
(Allianz · Travel Insured Intl · AIG)
Pre-existing waiver + actual cash reimbursement (not FCC). Costs ~$200–$260/pp; covers medical & medevac at $250K–$500K vs Princess' $20K/$100K.
You're booking a Wave Season promotion that is 100% non-refundable from day one
Lowest possible cruise fare
Third-party CFAR
Non-negotiable
A non-refundable deposit means a single sick week forfeits the entire fare with zero recourse. CFAR is the only path to recover 50–80%. The $200/pp premium is worth 10× the cost.
Everyone in the group is in their 20s–30s, healthy, AND you're comfortable self-insuring the $10,394 risk
Smaller emergency fund or higher risk tolerance
Skip insurance For our Crew this is not recommended. The age skew (mixing 22–57 year-olds), the infant, and the $17,793 all-in number are exactly the profile that benefits most from a CFAR policy.
You want maximum medical + medevac coverage for a 7-day Alaska sailing with a baby
Victoria BC counts as a foreign port
AIG Travel Guard Deluxe or Allianz Premier AIG Deluxe: $500K medical, $1M medevac. Alaska medevac from a small port routinely runs $50K–$200K — Princess' $100K Platinum cap is not enough.

Don't pick from a screenshot. Real prices depend on the exact trip cost, the home state of residence, and the ages being entered. The fastest way to compare all four options above (and 30+ others) on the same form is Squaremouth's cruise quote engine — enter the actual $10,394 cruise cost + airfare, pick "Cancel For Any Reason" as a filter, and the CFAR-enabled plans sort to the top. Phone support is 1-800-240-0369 (8am–10pm ET) if anyone in the group wants a human to walk through it. Zero-pressure — the aggregator is paid by the insurer, not by you.
Note for the calculator: The calculator's all-in total includes a $1,200 insurance line item based on a third-party CFAR policy at ~$200–$240 per adult × 5 adults (with Levi, age 17, added as a minor rider ~$50). Adjust down to ~$1,040 if you take Princess Platinum instead, up to ~$1,400 if you take Allianz Cancel Anytime, or to $0 if you decide to self-insure. The cruise-fare subtotal and shared costs above the insurance line do not change.

How this works

A Python script (~/homelab/scripts/cruise-price-tracker.py) runs weekly via cron on Mondays at 9:00 AM UTC. It reads the latest published fares from Princess.com + a manual price check (Costco / Avoya), updates ~/homelab/data/cruise-prices.json, and this widget re-renders from the cached JSON on the next page load.

For now, the --check mode is scaffolded but not implemented — Princess.com is JS-heavy and rate-limited, so we use a --manual mode that takes the inside + mini-suite per-person price and appends to the history. The cron line is in the script’s docstring (not auto-installed).

Caveats: “from” prices on cruise-line sites show the cheapest date in the season, not the specific June 5 sailing. Wave Season (Jan–Mar) drops the best promos. Final payment is March 7, 2027 (90 days, not 75 — Princess policy changed Oct 15, 2025).
